ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Absent Students
When students are absent from school, they are missing valuable instruction that often cannot be made up. Please attempt to make doctor, dentist, etc. appointments after school. If necessary, after-lunch appointments are best, as most reading, writing, and math instruction occurs in the morning. If in doubt, please check with your child’s teacher.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE IN SCHOOL IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO A CHILD’S EDUCATION. PARENTS ARE ASKED TO ENCOURAGE GOOD ATTENDANCE AND FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES LISTED BELOW IN CASE OF ABSENCE:
1. Reporting Absences: If your child will be absent from school, please call the school and report the child’s name, date of absence, teacher, and the reason for the absence. The school absence line is 760-721-2201.
2. Returning to School Following Absence: If your child was absent from school and you were not able to call the school office the morning of the absence, please write a note following the absence, including the name of the child, date of the absence and reason for the absence.
3. Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence from school is any absence without a valid excuse. Babysitting, shopping, visiting theme parks, and cleaning the house are examples of unexcused absences. Going out of town or being on vacation during school days is also considered an unexcused absence. Whenever unexcused absences occur too frequently, the teacher and/or principal will contact the student’s parents to discuss the problem and explore ways to prevent their reoccurrence. If this problem continues to occur, appropriate action will be taken by the school as required by District Policies and State Law to ensure the student’s regular attendance.
Tardy
Please make sure your child is on time for school. If your child is late, then he/she must report to the office for a late slip before going to class.
Unexcused tardiness is defined by school district policies as not being in the classroom at the time class begins unless there is a valid reason for being late, such as illness, doctor/dental appointments, family emergencies, or other justifiable reasons.
Continued tardiness will result in the teacher and/or principal contacting the student’s parents to discuss the problem and ways to prevent any reoccurrence of unexcused tardiness. If this problem continues to occur, appropriate action will be taken by the school as required by District Policies and State Law to ensure that the student will arrive on time for class.
Withdrawal of Students
Please notify the school office immediately of a student’s impending withdrawal. In this way, we can arrange for the transfer of student records.
Independent Study Contract
When a child is going to be absent from school for five (5) or more days for reasons other than illness, please contact the school office and arrange for an Independent Study Contract. Please give the classroom teacher at least 10 days advance notice to prepare a learning packet for the student to complete during his/her absence as explained in the Contract. If the work is completed and approved by the teacher upon the student’s return, the absence will be noted as excused. We appreciate your support and cooperation in this regard.
If you miss school, you miss out, and we miss you!
